Get Soaked

November 9, 2015

It's been a while since we had rain during one of our training runs.  In fact, I've talked about the streak several times lately.  Yesterday, the streak ended.  A nice group of us gathered at Clearwater and by the time we finished we were all soaked to the skin.  But we didn't let a little moisture dampen our spirits.  I didn't hear a word of complaint.  We gathered in the driving rain to pray and no one seemed to mind a bit.

As I drove home, I thought about the many references to rain in the Bible.  So often rain is a representation of God's provision. Without rain, the crops die and the people have nothing to eat.  Leviticus 26:4 is one of many examples.   "Then I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit."
As I considered that, I thought back to the message Ken Brown shared earlier in the day.  "We reap what we sow.  We reap where we sow.  God has called us to be gardeners in His fields."  If we are to bear fruit, we need the rain of God's Spirit to shower us. When we soak up God's word, we are better prepared to be the gardeners He has called us to be.

Yesterday, on Clearwater trail, we saw people all bundled up in rain gear, making every attempt to stay dry.  I wonder if we do the same in a spiritual sense.  Are there things in our lives that repel the rain of God's Spirit from reaching us?  Think about that this week and consider ditching the spiritual rain gear and getting soaked with God's Spirit.  It's then that the garden God has assigned us to will begin to bear fruit.

Don't forget these upcoming events:

  • We are encouraging ALL members of the Calvary Running Team to join us on Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 am, at Lively Pool on Thurston Road, to run the Turkey Stuffer 5k.  You can sign up at eclecticedgeracing.com.  All team members are encouraged to wear their CRT shirts and represent our team.  If you don't have a shirt, I will be making another order this week so get me your size.  Shirts cost $10.

  • The Pacific Northwest Marathon is sponsoring a contest from October 29th through December 9th.  It's pretty simple.  Run or Walk with a Friend and Win a Prize!  Here's how it works:

                     1. Help your friends reach their fitness goals by inviting them to run or walk with you in the month of November.
                     2. Post about your run/walk on the Pacific Northwest Marathon Facebook page.
                     3. Earn a point each day you run/walk with a friend.
                     4. Top 5 scores win prizes!
Check out the Pacific Northwest Marathon page for more information.

This week we will meet on Wednesday at noon at the Springfield entrance to Pre's Trail (the parking lot at the corner of Aspen and D streets).  On Saturday and Sunday, many of us will be at the couple retreat, but for those who are still around, on Saturday we will meet at 8 am at Weyerhaueser road off 57th street and Bob Straub Parkway. On Sunday we will meet at 3 pm, at Clearwater trail.  I hope to see you there!

Have a great week!

Pastor John
