This Halloween, my husband and I dressed up as a couple from the 40's. It was super fun planning it out and even taking pictures in black and white! I had my red dress, hat, shoes, beads, and of course that bold red lipstick to finish off the look of a 40's lady. My husband was my "Soldier boy". He put on his green Military uniform that he last wore in the Marines 16 years ago. My, was he handsome!
Unfortunately, when it came time to put on the shiny shoes that went with it, they broke. He had them tied and was all set to go, until he took his first couple steps. They split and there was no way he could wear them with his uniform. It would have looked silly and they wouldn't have held up as he walkedout in the stormy weather that evening. What to do?
Wife to the rescue! I remembered that he had some black Doc Martin shoes up in his closet. He's had them for years and they still have many years left in them. They are a great, well-made, pair of sturdy shoes. So problem solved! Sure, they weren't regulation, but they were better for withstanding all the puddles and mud he had to walk through and were comfortable at the same time.
Pondering over why his original shoes broke, my husband made the comment, "Well, they haven't been worn in 16 years. So they hadn't been used. Must have gotten brittle."
His comment made me think of our Faith. When not used, it can become weak and brittle, and can break when we really need to use it during those storms in our lives.
Have your "faith shoes" been forgotten in the closet? Are they becoming brittle and fragile because you haven't been stepping out and walking in faith? Maybe because you are afraid of where the Lord may lead you or ask of you? If so, I encourage you to pick up those "shoes" and start practicing walking in faith, even in the smallest of circumstances. For instance, "Lord I don't know what to make for dinner tonight. I really want to surprise my family with a great meal. So Lord, when I go to the store tonight, I am going to have faith that You will lead me to the right ingredients and You will inspire me to make a certain dish my family will really love...."
When you practice stepping out in faith in little things like that, then you will be better prepared to step out in faith when the big things come your way. For instance, "Lord, I don't have the money in my account to pay this next bill. But Lord, I know You see my needs and you are a loving God who cares and provides. So Jesus, I am going to write this check out, even not knowing where this money will come from, but I am trusting that You will provide."
And I have had that happen. It's pretty awesome. I love it when we put our faith and trust in God, not knowing the outcome as we step out in faith to accomplish something He has put on our hearts, and then BAM! God comes through with what we need, exactly when we need it. So I encourage you to strengthen your faith shoes, by walking in faith where you believe God is leading you to. If you need examples of him doing that, I encourage you to read the whole chapter of Hebrews 11. It's about many men and women of the Bible who stepped out in faith, knowing they may not see the outcome in their lifetime, but had the faith and hope that those things would come to pass in future generations. And they did. God was ever faithful.
Another fun example happened today. My good friend Anne Beem requested prayer that their heat pump would be fixed before the weather turns colder next week. The person who was to fix it, had to order parts and didn't think it could be fixed right away. That was this morning. After lifting that request up in prayer at Bible study, we just got a text from Anne, with a picture of all the parts needed, and will be getting the heat pumped fixed this weekend. YAY Jesus! What a speedy answer to prayer that was! He cares and He provides. We can trust Him with EVERYTHING. But we also need to be stepping out in faith, and when we do! Be on the lookout for an awesome outcome from Him!
Here are some great words regarding Faith:
"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith." Romans 1:17
"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God." Romans 5:1-2
"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13
"For we WALK BY FAITH, NOT by sight." 2 Corinthians 5:7
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." Galations 2:20
"IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one." Ephesians 6:16
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
"So also faith BY ITSELF, if it does not have works, is dead." James 2:17
Have a blessed day as you step out in faith!
