One of the most difficult components of improving fitness is the development of greater endurance. It's hard because the only way to accomplish it is to constantly push yourself, to go this week beyond where you went last week. Our bodies are wonderfully efficient and over time, if we continue to perform the same task, lifting a certain amount of weight for example, the body will stop developing and learn to take shortcuts. If we want to run farther or lift more, we have to continually push our limits, and pushing limits isn't fun, it's hard.
In the spiritual, it is also necessary to experience the difficult times in order to develop endurance. In James 1 we see that difficulties and trials can be a source of joy when we recognize that they are the path to greater faith and endurance.
"Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing." James 1:2-4
In Colossians 1:9-12 the Apostle Paul wrote that he was praying that God would "fill you with the knowledge of his well through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light." This is so important because it indicates that the strength to develop endurance comes from God. Through His strength, our endurance and faith can grow and develop, even in difficult times.
So here is a challenge for you. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, most of us will take time to consider how blessed we are and to be thankful. There isn't anything wrong with that, we do have much for which to be thankful. But consider adding recent difficulties, challenges or troubles to your list and take a moment to be thankful for the growth in faith and endurance that you have experienced as a result.
We are going to change up the schedule this week because of the Thanksgiving holiday. We won't be meeting on Wednesday, but we are encouraging all of the Calvary Running Team to join us on Thanksgiving morning for the Turkey Stuffer run, starting and finishing at Lively Pool on Thurston Road. The race begins at 8:30 and it's not to late to register. You can sign up on line at eclecticedgeracing.com This is a great event for both runners and walkers. Wear your CRT shirt and represent our team. (PS. The weather guessers are predicting temperatures in the teens or low twenties at start time, so dress appropriately.) On Saturday we will meet at 9 am instead of 8 am since it's a holiday weekend, at Clearwater trail. On Sunday we will meet again at 3 pm, also at Clearwater trail.
