Dear Parents, Grandparents, & Mentors of Calvary:
Your K-5th grade children will be encouraged to “lend a hand without looking for applause” (Matthew 6:1-4). Parent Cue: At dinner this week, ask: Who could you thank by serving them in secret? They will be practicing their song for Christmas Eve during their time upstairs. Please let me know if your child is particularly interested in singing at the Christmas Eve service so that I can send a CD home for them to practice. Also, we will be lighting our first Advent candle. This candle is purple representing Jesus’ royalty. This candle is called the “prophecy candle” and reminds us of God’s promises to send us a Savior in addition to His promises to return for us in the future.
Your Pre-K children will be learning that “God’s plan is always best” through the story of Joseph forgiving his brothers (Genesis 42-45; Psalm 16:11). Parent Cue: At play time this week, let your child draw a picture of your family. Talk about how our family is part of God’s plan for us, just like Joseph’s!
We want to give every family a little tool to use this Advent season to facilitate family talks about Jesus’ arrival. For the families with preschoolers, we have a book with beautiful illustrations for you to read to them throughout the next month. For the families with elementary children, we have a little centerpiece with stickers and some short devotional thoughts. These will be available in the atrium this Sunday.
In celebration of Jesus’ birthday, we will be having a birthday party on December 7th (Monday) from 6:30pm to 8pm. We are asking the children to bring socks, gloves, or hats for those in need as gifts for Jesus. You could even have them wrap them like birthday presents.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!
“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7, NIV84).
