How to Get Hungry
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be filled.”
In Journey, we’ve started a video series called Foundations. The first few videos are “How to fall in love with the Bible” and the speakers share how they fell in love with the Bible. This led our own group into discussion about the real-life struggles we each have with falling in love with the Bible. Here are some of the things that came up:
I don’t know where to start; it’s such a big book.
I get bogged down in the genealogies and in the details of Leviticus.
I realize I’m nowhere close to the standards of living the Bible calls me to, so I just get defeated and give up.
I don’t have time.
These are such legitimate struggles that I think every Christian can identify with. On the other hand, there are things all of us love about the Bible:
When I read it consistently, it changes my attitudes and my life.
I want to know the promises of God for my situation and my friends’ situations.
I want to have an answer for my faith when unbelievers ask.
I want to know this Jesus who changed my life!
We all agreed that we are going to read through Ephesians 1 all week this week, in order to discuss it next Saturday. This morning, I was thinking about how much affection I have for the people in that discussion, and praying for God to meet with them today when they open their Bibles to read. I began to reflect on my own journey and what strategy helps me to maintain my deep, nerdy, love for the Bible. It’s hunger. I’m hungry for more of God, more power, more peace, more wisdom. We all are, aren’t we?
Herein lies the problem: We’re all hungry—every one of us. But what are we feeding ourselves? THIS is key for me personally. When I’m most hungry, it’s when I’m not feeding on social media and mindless entertainment (don’t get me wrong, there’s a place for that). I’m most hungry when I’m filling my home and my car with worship music. I’m most hungry when I’m listening to sermons on my commute or at bedtime. I’m most hungry when I’m caught up in the story of the Bible and the promises tucked inside. I’m most hungry when I’m creating space to be hungry.
I have to create rules for myself in order to maintain that hunger. I don’t let myself scroll through social media in the morning until I’ve read and thought about the verse of the day on my You Version App. I don’t sit and binge watch Once Upon a Time unless I’ve INTERACTED with my Bible or listened to a sermon on my International House of Prayer app. I don’t call a friend to vent and complain until I’ve taken it to God and wrestled with Him about it.
The best part about these rules is that no one told me I had to do it this way. I just found out that I like the results of spending more time with God and in His word, than the other junk food I like to feed myself. Since they're my own rules, I have no qualms with breaking them sometimes. However, I recognized at some point that after I binge play Candy Crush, I feel lazy, unmotivated, and frankly a little grouchy. After I spend time in the Word, I feel inspired and at peace.
If you want to be filled with righteousness, you have to get hungry for it. It’s hard to get hungry though, if you’re always filling up on junk food. Eat your veggies and protein before you decide if you want desert and potato chips. What rules do you want to make for yourself to nourish your spirit well?
