The Path to Improvement

Most of us, if we are honest, aren't satisfied for very long with our current level of physical or spiritual fitness. And that's a good thing. Dissatisfaction can spur us to seek growth. We want to improve, to get better. Whether you desire for physical improvement, or spiritual growth, the path to achieving your goal won't be easy. There are no shortcuts. We all know this is true but still we get suckered in to believing that there might actually be a quick fix or a pill to magically get us to a new level of fitness.

A recent issue of Shape magazine touted a Seated Full Body Workout that "will give you a full-body strength and cardio workout while sitting in a chair". Search YouTube and you can find a video for a "Chair Fitness Workout". Late night TV has advertisements for the AB Rocket that promises that you can "just sit, relax, rock and let the AB Rocket do the work". We all know that these claims are ridiculous but the millions of dollars in sales each year spent on these type of products indicates that many are still hoping to find a shortcut. The reason we look for a shortcut is that real, authentic, lasting growth is HARD! It takes work. We keep hoping for an easy path while realizing deep down that there really isn't one. If we want to be able to run a marathon, we have to do the long, hard runs in training. If we want to develop our faith, we have to be willing to go through the valley and trust that God is bigger than whatever giant we may be facing. One of the best illustrations of this process in the Bible is found in James 1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Growth and improvement is a process, and part of the process is enduring the difficult things, the trials. In the end, we are far better off embracing the hard workouts and the daily challenges and recognizing them for what they are - the real path toward growth, than looking for the next shortcut. Here are the CRT training opportunities for this week. OnWednesday we will meet at noon at the Springfield entrance to Pre's Trail (the corner of Aspen and D Streets), on Saturday we will meet at 8 am at Weyerhaueser road (the jct. of 57th street and Bob Straub Parkway) and on Sunday we will meet at 3 pm at Clearwater Trail.
