Not Equal

The second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."  When the authors of the Declaration wrote this about equality, they were clearly not thinking of runners!  In the past couple of weeks I've had the dubious pleasure of running with some of the younger, faster members of the Calvary Running Team.  A couple of times it about killed me.  Created equal doesn't mean equal in ability, speed or stamina! 

 
Yesterday I was having a good run and feeling pretty good about my pace.  I had watched the movie McFarland the night before and was feeling inspired.  Then a young 20 something guy ran past me like I was standing still.  I briefly tried to match his pace, but soon had to give up.  How disheartening!

It's great when we can come together and push one another to achieve more than we could on our own.  We can grow and improve both physically and spiritually through the encouragement of others.  That's the point the writer of Hebrew's was making when he said, "Consider how you may spur one another on to love and good deeds." But there is a vast difference between striving to improve and trying be something you're not.  We have to be able to honestly evaluate our ability, our current situation and not compare ourselves to others.

The apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12 "Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don't think you are better than you really are.  Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us." 
 
Personally, I have to accept that I can't run like someone in their 20's and that's okay.  I can still seek to be the best I can be without trying to live up to unreasonable expectations. I'm challenged by the saints around me who have developed such a godly character.  Their example can spur me on to grow in my faith, but I shouldn't try to be something I'm not.  It all comes down to honest evaluation of myself.
 
Fortunately, we have runners and walkers of all abilities on the CRT so there is always a place for you to fit in.  If you would like to come join us and be encouraged to grow and improve we would love to see you! On Wednesday we will meet at noon at Clearwater Trail (just east of 42nd street off of Jasper road). On Saturday we will meet at 8 am at Alton Baker Park and on Sunday we will meet at 3 pm at Clearwater trail.
