Good in All Things

I'll be honest, this hasn't been one of my better weeks. I was progressing well in my training and felt like I was improving. Then, in one clumsy second, it all changed. I fell awkwardly from the back of my pickup and bashed my calf on the tow hitch. Suddenly I went from physically able to run 10 miles without getting sore, to not being able to walk without severe pain and a noticeable limp. Then shortly after the accident, I came across this familiar verse and at first it didn't set well. Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." NIV Maybe you've been there too. Something unexpected happens or you are faced with an unwanted challenge and you think, "How can God work good from this?" My perspective began to change when I took time to read the verse and understand what it meant. First it says, "we know". Not like we know that two plus two is four, but we know by faith and through our own experience about God's character; that He is good, that He loves us, that He has our best interest in mind, AND that He can bring good from even the most difficult, seemingly bad situation. Remember Joseph? If God can turn being sold into slavery, falsely accused and thrown into prison into "You are the second most powerful person in all of Egypt", He can certainly do the same for whatever I'm facing. Second, it says "All things". There are no exceptions. I might not see it today, or next week, but I can trust that God WILL work ALL THINGS for the good of those who love Him. Did you catch the part about "for THE good". I might not consider it good, or recognize it's value, but God can use hardship for my good. Like eating healthy. You might prefer a banana split over a salad, but you know which one is for your good. I don't know why I fell out of my pickup, but I'm sure God didn't cause it to happen. And now I'm also sure that He can and will use even this setback for my good. Who knows, maybe He will use this as an opportunity to help me develop more patience. Whatever comes from it, I KNOW that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him. I've been so grateful this week for the support of the members of the Calvary Running Team. Everyone has been so encouraging. That's what the body of Christ is called to do. If you could use some encouragement and support, especially if you are facing an unexpected challenge, we'd love to have you join us. This week our training schedule will be a little different as some of us are preparing to go serve in Mexico. We will NOT be meeting on Wednesday this week. On Saturday we will meet at 8 am at the Weyerhaeuser haul road (the junction of Bob Straub Parkway and 57th street) and on Sunday we will be at Clearwater trail at 4 pm. We look forward to seeing you out on the trail! Have a great week! Pastor John
