The recent hot weather has caught many by surprise. When the weather changes so quickly, our bodies don't have time to acclimate. For instance, during the cooler spring weather, you won't sweat as much during a run and consequently, you can run further between water breaks. When it gets hot you need to replace fluids more often. Not hydrating properly can lead to muscle cramps, head aches, stomach aches and even more serious health issues.
It really doesn't matter how physically fit you are, your body still needs to be hydrated regularly. Several years ago I was working with a couple of 20 something young men who were physical specimens of health and fitness. And they knew it. They were proud of their chiseled bodies and exhibited almost an invincible air. The weather turned hot and dry and during one morning briefing we warned everyone of the dangers of not hydrating properly. The two young men smiled and indicated that due to their level of fitness, they didn't require water as often as mere mortals. Around mid afternoon, one of the young guys was transported to the local hospital via ambulance with severe dehydration and the second was airlifted to a trauma center where he almost died.
The point is, we all need water, regardless of our physical fitness level and arrogance can have serious consequences. 1 Corinthians 10:12 warns "So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall." Proverbs 16:18 says, "Pride goes before destruction." It's so easy to look at others and see their mistakes and fail to recognize our own potential to fall.
So, when you are out for a workout in the hot weather, remember that EVERYONE needs to hydrate regularly. And whatever you are doing, remember that it's always best to remain humble and give God the credit for our successes lest we begin to think that we can do it on our own.
All are welcome to join the CRT for a run/walk. It's a great time of encouragement, fellowship and support. As summer begins we will be moving our Wednesday and Sunday training times later to beat the heat. Please take note of the time changes. We will have three training opportunities this week. On Wednesday we will meet at Clearwater trail at 7 pm, on Saturday we will meet at 8 am at the Weyerhaeuser Haul Road (the corner of 57th street and Bob Straub Parkway) and on Sunday, we will meet at 7 pm at Clearwater Trail. I hope to see you there.
Have a great week!
