Don't Sacrifice the Gift

Any runner who hasn't been living under a rock knows about Steve Prefontaine. In the early years of Track Town USA, Steve Prefontaine turned the spotlight on Eugene and on the sport of running like no one before him. His all out, go for broke, somewhat unconventional running style was entertaining and exciting.

He wasn't always the best athlete on the track but he often overcame that fact by sheer toughness. He once said, "A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more." To Prefontaine, it wasn't just about training, it was about toughness. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, said in Ecclesiastes 9:11 "The fastest runner doesn't always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn't always win the battle." Solomon also realized that it takes more than physical ability or skill to come out ahead. One of the most famous quotes from Steve Prefontaine is, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." As we ran last week, I noticed a young man in a wheelchair and I was again reminded of the wonderful gift of mobility. What a gift to be able to walk and run! Solomon also wrote, "Don't let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator." Ecclesiastes 12:1 Every heart beat and every breath is a gift from our creator and rather than waste them on empty pursuits, we should give our best, lest we sacrifice the gift. If you would like to exercise your gift of mobility, the Calvary Running Team can help. We would love to have you join us. This week we will meet on Wednesday at Dorris Ranch at 7 pm.
