Long runs are difficult. It's hard to get up mentally for a 12 mile run. There is almost a sense of dread at the start. I've developed some ways to combat the discouraging feeling at the start of a long run. I focus on breaking the run into smaller, manageable segments. I tell myself that I'm just going to run 2.5 miles to the bathrooms to begin with. Then when I get there I think, 'It's only another mile and a half to Doris Ranch, I can do that" and so on. At the same time I try NOT to think about the fact that I'm still running away from my car and at some point I'll have to start back.
Then there's the fuel and fluid issue. Experts say that if you are going over 45 minutes you should carry water and food to refuel. Long races have aid stations every couple of miles. These provide fluids and nutrients to help you continue, but they also help break up the run into smaller, seemingly more manageable segments.
Our lives are like a long race and God, in His wisdom, broke it up into small, manageable segments. We call them days. He even meets our needs in small segments. Jesus taught His disciples to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread." He didn't suggest that they ask God for enough for a week or a month, only 'this day.' He also said in Matthew chapter 6, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." When the Israelite's were wandering in the desert, God provided food for them each day. Most of us would prefer that God give us enough for a year, but that's not how He works. He wants us to learn to trust Him and He is completely trustworthy.
So the next time you are preparing for a long run or walk, remember to break it up into smaller, manageable segments. And the next time you are tempted to worry about something you might need tomorrow, remember that God will provide for our 'daily bread', one day at a time. He is faithful.

On Wednesday, we will meet at Clearwater trail at 7 pm. On Saturday we will mix it up a bit and meet at 9 am at Elijah Bristow State Park for a trail run. This is a fun place to run or walk. Dirt and bark trails wind through the thick cover of Oak trees and along the river. To find Elijah Bristow take Hwy 58 to Wheeler Road just past the Chevron gas station and look for the entrance.
