Thanks, I Needed That!

Perhaps you remember the Mennen Skin Bracer aftershave commercials from the 70's. A man would splash some aftershave on his hands, then firmly slap it on his face and declare, "Thanks, I needed that!" For some reason those commercials were very popular. There are many things we need, but in my opinion, a slap in the face doesn't rank very high on the list. However, something we all need is encouragement and support. I am so thankful for those who come along side and support me. Like my buddy Jerry, who prepared the devotionals the past two weeks while I was on vacation. It's so wonderful to have people around to love us and share the load, to encourage us, to pick us up when we're down. Having others to support and encourage us, is important whether we are pursuing a running or fitness goal, trying to be more disciplined in our eating habits, or working to develop a more godly character.

In I Thessalonians 5:11, the Apostle Paul encourages believers to "encourage one another and build each other up." When we follow his instructions, we enable those around us to accomplish things they never thought possible. And in a way, we get to share in their success. I was thinking recently about all of the goals that members of the Calvary Running Team have achieved. The ones who had never run a 5K and were able to complete their first one without stopping. Those who ran their first marathon or half marathon. Sometimes, the encouragement had nothing to do with running, like when one of our group was facing a health crisis. In each case, one of the main reasons for their success was the support and encouragement of the rest of the group. Often, when we are asked to list the things for which we are thankful, the list is comprised primarily of things - possessions. As we take time this week for Thanksgiving, consider those who have come alongside to encourage you. Maybe even take time to tell them, "Thanks, I needed that!" Soon the CRT will have the opportunity to help others to achieve their goals by offering encouragement and support. We will be partnering with the Pacific Northwest Marathon to help participants prepare.

Our training schedule will be abreviated this week due to the holiday. We will NOT meet this Wednesday so we can prepare to run the Turkey Stuffer at Lively Pool on Thanksgiving morning. It a great race and it's not too late to register. You can sign up at the Willamelane office in Springfield.

On Saturday we will meet at Clearwater trail at 9 am and on Sunday we will meet at Clearwater trail at 3 pm. I hope to see you out there this week. Have a great week! Pastor John
