Warm Up!

Welcome again to those who are joining the Calvary Running Team and training for the Pacific Northwest Marathon or half Marathon. And a belated Merry Christmas to all! The cold weather and the holiday derailed some of our training runs the past couple of weeks, but now it's time to get back at it and get some consistent miles logged. The continued chilly weather got me to thinking about not only the importance of staying warm, but also warming up. I was reading another article this week about the importance of pre-workout warm ups. The experts stated that it is critical for runners to warm up prior to a workout. Not only will warming up help avoid injury, but it will also help you run more efficiently. Those who are running longer distances are especially prone to tight leg muscles and need to make sure they are warmed up adequately. In addition, EKG's performed on runners who start running without first warming up reflected abnormal heart rhythms. Warming up properly allows the coronary arteries to dilate which improves blood flow. In the cold weather, warm ups are especially important to avoid tearing cold, stiff muscle fibers. In a similar way, it's important to warm up spiritually before leaping into your daily activities. Psalm 92:1-2 says, "It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening." The Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:6 that we shouldn't be anxious or worry about anything but instead - "pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." In this way we can avoid the mental, emotional and spiritual injuries that might occur if we weren't properly "warmed up" to face the challenges of the day. So this week, don't forget to warm up to avoid injury. If you would like to join the CRT for a training run, some encouragement and support, we will be meeting three times this week. On Wednesday we will meet at noon at Clearwater Trail. On Saturday we will meet at 9 am at Clearwater Trail and on Sunday, we will meet at 3 pm also at Clearwater Trail. We are also looking for a few brave souls to join us as we start 2017 off by running a 5K at midnight. Check out Eclectic Edge Racing online and look for First Run. We hope to see you out there. Have a great week! Pastor John
