If you have been working at improving your fitness for any length of time, you've probably gotten to a place where you question whether you're improving at all. You're eating better, getting regular exercise, but the needle on the scale seems to be stuck! Or, you are sticking to your running plan but the miles don't seem to be any easier and your pace per mile doesn't seem to be getting any better. Sound familiar?
We've all been there. Maybe you're there now. It can be discouraging to work hard and not see the results we would like to see. If we stay disciplined though, the results will come. We just have to be patient and stick with it. Whether you are seeking weight loss or improved fitness, the experts all agree that the best long term results come slowly and steadily when you stay consistent.
The same is true if you are seeking improvement in your spiritual life. Maybe you desire to get rid of a bad habit or learn to be more kind to others. Valuable, long term change comes through patience. Jesus made this point in reference to the church at Thyatira in Revelation chapter 2. “I know all the things you do. I have seen your love, your faith, your service, and your patient endurance. And I can see your constant improvement in all these things."
Sometimes we don't recognize our own incremental improvement, but others do. A word of encouragement or a complement from someone else can make your day. And it can be the one thing that keeps you going when you're feeling discouraged. That's why we often see more improvement when we are part of a group or team. The extra support spurs us on when we feel like giving up.
