Wise Counsel

Whether you are working on improving your fitness, loosing weight, trying to be more disciplined in your faith or considering buying a car - there will always be someone who is ready to offer advise. The problem is, not all counsel is wise counsel. For example, everyone has a plan to help you lose weight, but not every plan is a health one. You've heard the stories. One of my co-workers tried to sell me on the merits of his new diet plan. He ate nothing but bacon, three meals a day. He eventually lost some weight, but soon gained it all back. In the meantime, his cholesterol must have been through the roof! The same is true for fitness plans. If you pick up a running magazine, there is sure to be a plan to help you "rock your next 10K". What these plans don't account for is that we are all different; we have different schedules, different body styles and different levels of fitness. What works for you, might not work for me. When it comes to our spiritual health, the same challenges remain. We aren't all in the same place, so it's unrealistic to expect that we could or should be equally disciplined. In each instance, it's important to heed the advise of those who know us, who know our unique situation and can not only help us formulate a plan for improvement, but will walk with us on the path to change. If you are seeking improvement, go to those who know you, who you trust, and who are properly equipped to assist you. Don't go to a weight lifter to get a running plan! And don't be afraid to seek out input from several sources. Proverbs 15:22 says, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." One of the great things about the Calvary Running Team is the variety of experience within our group. We have members who can share how they effectively lost weight and others who have prepared for their first marathon. Come join the CRT for a run this week and find some advisors who can give you wise counsel. On Wednesday we will meet at noon at the new Millrace extension to the Clearwater trail. It's on the corner of 32nd street and Jasper road, between Agnes Steward school and Douglas Gardens school. On Saturday we will meet at 9 am at Millrace Trail. There will be NO run on Sunday. I hope to see you out there. Have a great week! Pastor John
