I recently read that local doctors are recommending vitamin D supplements due to the long, dreary winter. When the days are short and cloudy during the winter, we don't get the benefit of natural sunlight, which produces vitamin D necessary for good health. Thus the recommendation to take a supplement. Most people understand that vitamin D is essential for healthy bones. It promotes the absorption of calcium which is necessary for strong bones and can prevent osteoporosis in later years. But recent studies also suggest that low levels of vitamin D can led to type 1 diabetes as well as several forms of cancer. In addition, you can lower your blood pressure as well as lower your chances of heart attacks, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis simply by maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D. So, vitamin D is important!
It made me think that the same is true in a spiritual sense. We need regular exposure to the Son, through prayer, Bible reading and teaching to maintain good spiritual health. During times of stress or difficult life challenges, it may be easy to pull away from God, resulting in less exposure. Instead, these are the times when we need extra time in His presence. Psalm 37:39 says "The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble."
Looking to the Lord in times of trouble, is like taking a supplement. Call it vitamin G.
So treat the dreary winter days with extra vitamin D and when you encounter dark days of the soul, make sure you get extra Son exposure through time in the Word, prayer and fellowship with other believers.
One option for fellowship with other believers is to join us for a run/walk this week. On Wednesday we will meet at noon at the new Millrace extension to the Clearwater trail. It's on the corner of 32nd street and Jasper road, between Agnes Steward school and Douglas Gardens school. On Saturday we will meet at 9 am at Millrace, and on Sunday we will meet at Clearwater trail at 4 pm.
I hope to see you out there.
Have a great week!
